For decades, Alberto Continentino helped shape Brazilian music from behind the scenes. Now, he is stepping forward with a sound entirely his own.
Music was part of Alberto Continentino's life long before it became his profession. Growing up in a musical family, he was surrounded by the sounds and ideas that would eventually shape his career.
His father, Mauro Continentino, worked as a pianist and keyboardist in Brazilian popular music and jazz, while his mother, Marisa Gandelman, later taught voice and piano. The musical environment at home gave Continentino an early understanding of both performance and musical expression.
He began playing classical guitar at nine. A few years later, a brother needed a bass player for a band, and the instrument that would become central to Continentino's career entered his life.
By his early teens, he was already working with established Brazilian musicians including Mauro Senise and Milton Nascimento. At 20, he began touring internationally with Caetano Veloso, beginning a long association that would establish him firmly within Brazil's musical world.
The Musician Behind the Music
Much of Continentino's career has been defined by collaboration.
Over three decades, he became a sought-after bassist, arranger and studio musician, contributing to recordings by artists from different generations and across Brazilian musical styles. His work included Milton Nascimento's Grammy-winning 1997 album Nascimento, as well as performances with Cama de Gato, Beto Guedes and Elba Ramalho.
His collaborations later extended to artists from a younger generation, including Ana Frango Elรฉtrico and Baco Exu do Blues.
It is a career built on musical trust. Rather than occupying the centre of the stage, Continentino spent much of his professional life helping other musicians realise their ideas.
That experience also shaped his own understanding of composition. For Continentino, collaboration is not separate from authorship. The musicians, producers, engineers and other creative partners chosen for a recording become part of the composition itself.
This philosophy would become increasingly important as he developed his own work.
Finding His Own Voice
Continentino's formal move into solo authorship began with Ao Som dos Planetas in 2015.
Three years later came Ultraleve, an album that explored a strongly jazz-influenced musical language without settling into conventional jazz structures. It marked another stage in the development of a sound that could draw from sophisticated harmony while remaining open to experimentation.
His third solo album, Cabeรงa a Mil e o Corpo Lento, took that process further.
Released in June 2025 through the RISCO label, the album emerged from the extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic. The period of isolation prompted Continentino to reconsider what might happen if he stopped working primarily within other people's musical frameworks.
The recording process itself reflected the circumstances.
Continentino recorded extensive bass and keyboard parts from his apartment in Rio de Janeiro, while other musicians contributed remotely from different parts of the world. Nina Miranda recorded in London, Gabriela Riley in Chicago, and brass musicians recorded their individual parts from their own homes.
The finished album brought those separate contributions together.
Across its twelve tracks, Cabeรงa a Mil e o Corpo Lento moves through funk-influenced grooves, atmospheric ballads and dreamlike passages, drawing on MPB, soul and experimental pop.
For an artist accustomed to supporting other people's musical visions, the album represents a more personal form of expression.
From the Studio to Krakรณw
Continentino's career has therefore taken an unusual path. He spent decades becoming an essential part of other artists' music before gradually developing a solo identity of his own.
His experience as a bassist and arranger remains central to that identity, but his recent work places greater emphasis on his own compositions, voice and artistic choices.
That evolution will come to Krakรณw on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, when Alberto Continentino Trio performs at Mercy Brown Cocktails Jazz & Burlesque.
